Following the shock of the Christchurch massacre on 15 March 2019, New Zealand went through a grieving process. Part of which involved an acceptance that hate was in the community. New Zealand began to take a critical look at itself in an attempt to understand where hate such as racism was coming from. It became clear that the far majority of people in New Zealand celebrated our cultural diversity but an undercurrent also existed of historical racism and a smaller element of extreme racism.
The Ministry of Education along with most government departments embarked on a series of initiatives with the aim of supporting cultural diversity and wellbeing. The MOE initiated a funding round for projects up to the value of $15,000 that had focussed on International Student Wellbeing. WISA was awarded $15,000 for their project.
